Installation Of Concrete Patios

Concrete patios provide a suitable space for outdoor family activities, and the predominant construction material is concrete. Preparation of the concrete presents the most critical phase of construction as the due conditions of workability and water retention ability has to be considered. Patio installation requires different materials such as plastic sheeting, bagged concrete, compactible gravel, and stakes, among other components.

The installation should follow the following steps.

A. Setting up of the guide strings and square the layout

These guides will show the edges of the patio and are put using mason’s line and stakes. Having selected the patio area, there is a division of two stakes at each corner with the stakes at one foot beyond the patio edge. From this method, the point of intersection of the strings will mark the corners for the patio, which will give us a good layout of the area. B. Sloping of the strings

C. Excavation

This involves the removal of vegetation in the patio area; it should always provide an allowance of 6 inches for the setting of concrete form. Excavation should go up to a depth of 8 inches; one should be aware of the excavation depths from the layout lines; the soil should always be tamped considerably using a plate compactor.

D. Installation of the gravel base

The excavated area should be filled with compactible gravel of 2 inches then compact with a plate compactor. Add another 2­inch gravel then smoothen the layer. With the carpenter’s level, ensure that the slope is level end­to­end and gravel level side­to­side then compact the layer.

E. Building of formwork for concrete and secure them appropriately

Here, the interior dimensions of the form should be commensurate with the final dimensions of the slab. A check of whether it conforms to square should also be conducted using the string layouts.

F. Pouring and screeding of concrete

This is done while the interior of the formwork is coated with oil to prevent concrete sticking on them. Transfer mixed concrete from the mixing area then spread it with a shovel to fill the form completely up to the top. Using a board, screed the concrete surface while removing any excess or fill the low sections until the top of the concrete is level.

G. Finishing of the concrete

This involves allowing the concrete to cure until all the water bleeds out, use the edge control tool to guarantee the smoothness of the edges. The concrete surface is then covered with plastic sheeting and curing with water each day for two to three weeks. Once this is achieved., one can remove the sheeting, disassemble the formwork and have your concrete patio.
